WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?


A non-invasive treatment that helps your body heal.

Shockwave therapy (also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT) uses high-energy acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

The waves are delivered through the skin to the affected area, where they create a controlled mechanical stimulus. This can help to improve blood flow, encourage tissue repair, reduce inflammation and break down areas of hardened tissue, such as calcification.

Shockwave therapy is a well-researched and widely used treatment for a range of tendon and musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those that have not responded to rest, exercise or other conservative treatments.

WHEN IT MAY HELP


Shockwave therapy may help with a range of conditions.

Shockwave therapy is commonly used to target persistent tendon and musculoskeletal conditions, including those affecting the feet, ankles, knees, hips, elbows and shoulders.

WHAT TO EXPECT


Shockwave treatment involves a series of rapid pressure pulses applied directly to the affected area. Treatment is relatively quick and the intensity can be adjusted throughout the session.

What does shockwave treatment feel like?

You may experience some discomfort as the shockwaves are applied, particularly over sensitive areas. Your practitioner can adjust the intensity to
keep treatment tolerable.

DURING TREATMENT


The treated area may feel mildly tender or sore afterwards, similar to post-exercise. This usually settles within 24-48 hours and most people can return to their normal daily activities.

AFTER TREATMENT

Treatment typically takes around 10-15 minutes. Most patients require 3-4 sessions, usually spaced one week apart.
